Jaden Butcher sentenced to 220 months for role in 2023 mass shooting

Jaden Trejaun Butcher, 20, was sentenced Wednesday to 220 months for his role in a mass shooting that injured nine people in Minneapolis on Aug. 20, 2023.
He pleaded guilty in April to six counts of first-degree attempted murder.
“Mr. Butcher caused immense physical and emotional harm to the victims in this incident; we’re grateful no lives were lost,” Hennepin County Attorney Mary Moriarty said. “Our thoughts are with all the victims of Mr. Butcher’s actions. This is a lengthy sentence that protects our community and holds him accountable for his actions that evening.”
He has 499 days of credit for time already served.
Mr. Butcher’s co-defendant, Demario Dempsey, pleaded guilty to multiple charges and was sentenced to 182 months on July 2, 2025.
