7/2/2025
Demario Dempsey, 19, was sentenced Wednesday for his involvement in a mass shooting that injured nine people in Minneapolis on Aug. 20, 2023.
Mr. Dempsey, a minor at the time of the shooting, was certified to be prosecuted in adult court earlier this year. He pleaded guilty to three counts of attempted second-degree murder as well as being a prohibited person in possession of a firearm in a separate case and was sentenced to 182 months.
“Mr. Dempsey’s actions were incredibly dangerous and harmful, and my thoughts are with all those impacted by him,” Hennepin County Attorney Mary Moriarty said. “Many people were physically injured, and others were left traumatized by experiencing such a terrible incident firsthand. This lengthy sentence is appropriate to hold Mr. Dempsey accountable and protect our community.”
Mr. Dempsey has 470 days of credit for time already served. His co-defendant, Jaden Butcher, is scheduled to be sentenced on July 9.
