“Many communities in Hennepin County lack an understanding of the legal system simply because resources haven't been created to overcome language or literacy barriers. That creates an unacceptable disparity,” Hennepin County Attorney Mary Moriarty said. “These videos, now professionally dubbed in three additional languages, break down common legal terms and processes, making justice more accessible and equitable for all.”
Following through on Hennepin County Attorney Moriarty’s commitment to accessibility, this is one of the most comprehensive efforts in the United States and will aid residents’ understanding of the critically important role the legal system plays in all our lives.
Many public institutions wait until translation is required. The Hennepin County Attorney’s Office is setting a new standard by making legal knowledge accessible proactively.
Topics of the series include the office’s philosophy on prosecuting for public safety, an explanation of the HCAO’s Conviction Integrity Unit, Extreme Risk Protection Orders (ERPOs) and many more.
David LaBahn, President, Association of Prosecuting Attorneys:
"This effort from the Hennepin County Attorney’s Office is a major step toward greater transparency and increasing accessibility to the legal system for all communities – especially those that are often left behind due to language barriers.
“The Association of Prosecuting Attorneys is a national leader in training and technical assistance, with members who serve as prosecutors, legal system professionals, and community partners. Through its 'Explains' series, the HCAO has shown its commitment to breaking language barriers is worth replicating in jurisdictions across the country.”
