Hennepin County Attorney’s Office files murder charge in Richfield death

7/7/2025

The Hennepin County Attorney’s Office filed a murder charge Monday against Jose Luis Lopez Xique, 27, in the death of Kayli Grace Arseth on June 16, 2025.

Mr. Lopez Xique currently faces one count of second-degree intentional murder.

Messages between the two leading up to June 16 show Mr. Lopez Xique and Kayli Arseth knew each other and that Mr. Lopez Xique was asking for a romantic relationship despite Ms. Arseth making clear that she was only interested in friendship.

During the investigation, law enforcement recovered the following at a location where Mr. Lopez Xique’s phone was stationary for several minutes on June 16:

  • Two bags of discarded items including ammunition, an empty box of gauze, disposable gloves, a pair of shoes, and a hat
  • Wipes, masking tape, rubber gloves in a nearby trash bin

“This was a terrible instance of extreme, targeted violence that took Kayli from her loved ones,” Hennepin County Attorney Mary Moriarty said. “My thoughts are with her family during this extraordinarily difficult period. Our office will prosecute Mr. Lopez Xique to protect our community and hold him accountable for his actions.”
