Brooklyn Park man sentenced for negligent discharge that resulted in best friend’s death

7/17/2025

Anwar Hussein Mohamed, 20, was sentenced to 48 months stayed for four years with 364 days in the Adult Corrections Facility on one count of second-degree manslaughter, stemming from a negligent discharge that killed Nebil Ahmed Omer on Oct. 12, 2024.

Additionally, Mr. Mohamed must complete 120 hours of Community Service Work on firearm training and responsibility.

The Court found Mr. Mohamed to be particularly amenable to probation, which was supported by the Hennepin County Attorney’s Office due to several factors including his early acceptance of responsibility, strong community support, his immediate and consistent remorse, and a nonexistent record.

Mr. Mohamed pleaded guilty to the lone count on May 23, 2025.

“This tragic accident took Nebil’s life and forever changed the lives of his loved ones, including his best friend, Anwar Mohamed,” Hennepin County Attorney Mary Moriarty said. “My thoughts are with Nebil’s family and loved ones during such a difficult time. Firearms are incredibly dangerous when handled unsafely or by individuals without proper training and experience, and we must use all the tools available to avoid incidents like this in the future.”

Case Number: 27-CR-25-1415
