Hennepin County Attorney’s Office confirms multiple charges against Vance Luther Boelter, will seek first-degree murder charges

6/16/2025

The Hennepin County Attorney’s Office announced multiple charges against Vance Luther Boelter Monday and will seek first-degree murder charges.

Mr. Boelter was charged via a warrant issued nationwide with two counts of second-degree intentional murder and two counts of second-degree attempted intentional murder.

It is common practice for the office to charge second-degree murder to secure a warrant as quickly as possible, which occurred in this case. The Hennepin County Attorney’s Office intends to seek first-degree murder, which carries a mandatory sentence of life without the possibility of parole.

“Early Saturday morning, Speaker Emerita Melissa Hortman, her husband, Mark, and Minnesota State Senator John Hoffman and his wife, Yvette, were targeted in their homes by an individual posing as a police officer,” Hennepin County Attorney Mary Moriarty said. “Melissa and Mark Hortman were parents, neighbors, and friends. Their loss is felt deeply by the people who knew and loved them. Our thoughts and support are with State Senator Hoffman and his family.

“I want to thank the Bureau of Criminal Apprehension, the Hennepin County Sheriff’s Office, the Brooklyn Park Police Department, and the hundreds of local, state, and federal law enforcement officers who worked tirelessly to apprehend Vance Boelter,” County Attorney Moriarty said. “People were understandably terrified over the last several days, and the state owes you a debt of gratitude for your swift work.”
