Hennepin County Attorney’s Office secures guilty plea, 420-month sentence for 2024 fatal shooting

6/9/2025

The Hennepin County Attorney’s Office secured a guilty plea from Dameon Markese Collins, 24, and an agreed 420-month sentence for the 2024 fatal shooting of Carl Woodard.

Mr. Collins pleaded guilty Monday to one count of second-degree intentional murder. The 420-month sentence is an upward departure from the presumptive sentence under the Minnesota Sentencing Guidelines.

“My thoughts are with Carl’s family after today’s plea,” Hennepin County Attorney Mary Moriarty said. “Mr. Collins’s actions took Carl’s life, causing immeasurable harm to his loved ones, and frightening a community. While Carl should still be alive, this guilty plea and the sentencing to come will hold Mr. Collins accountable and prevent him from doing more harm to our community.”

Mr. Collins is currently scheduled to be sentenced on July 15 at 1:15 p.m.

Case Number: 27-CR-24-16327

Additional information:

The Minnesota Sentencing Guidelines determine the presumptive sentence for felony offenses. The presumptive sentence is reached by comparing the severity level of the offense with the defendant’s criminal history score.

A sentence may depart from the sentencing guidelines if the court finds it appropriate.
