Hennepin County Attorney’s Office secures guilty verdicts on all charges against Derrick Thompson

6/6/2025

The Hennepin County Attorney’s Office secured guilty verdicts on all charges against Derrick John Thompson, 29, for his role in a severe crash that killed five young women in 2023.

The five women ranged in ages from 17 to 20: Sabiriin Mohamoud Ali, Siham Ada Odhowa, Sahra Liban Gesaade, Sagal Burhaan Hersi, and Salma Mohamed Abdikadir.

Mr. Thompson was convicted of the following charges:

  • Five counts of third-degree murder
  • Five counts of criminal vehicular homicide, operating a motor vehicle in a grossly negligent manner
  • Five counts of criminal vehicular homicide, driver who causes collision leaves the scene

“The thoughts of everyone in our office are with the families of Sabiriin, Siham, Sahra, Sagal, and Salma. This was a heartbreaking tragedy that took the lives of five women who had their whole lives ahead of them,” Hennepin County Attorney Mary Moriarty said. “In an instant, they were ripped from their loved ones because of Mr. Thompson’s reckless and dangerous actions. His choices that day scarred many lives and affected an entire community. Mr. Thompson is being held accountable, and we will do everything we can to ensure that he can never do this again.

“Terrible losses like these are entirely preventable. Anyone who gets behind the wheel must remember that their vehicle can become a weapon that causes incalculable damage.”

Mr. Thompson is currently scheduled to be sentenced on July 24 at 10 a.m.
