Hennepin County Attorney’s Office brings multiple charges against Troy Payton
9/4/2025
Troy Mike Payton, 45, was charged Thursday by the Hennepin County Attorney’s Office with 2 counts of fleeing police in a motor vehicle resulting in death and 1 count of fleeing police in a motor vehicle resulting in great bodily harm. These charges stem from a series of incidents on Thursday morning in which Mr. Payton allegedly stole a vehicle, discharged a firearm, and, while actively fleeing police in the stolen vehicle, crashed into another vehicle on Olson Memorial Highway. As a result of the crash, the adult driver and passenger in the other vehicle were killed, and a 6-year old child was seriously injured.
“This tragic loss of life was entirely preventable,” Hennepin County Attorney Mary Moriarty said. “Two women with their entire lives ahead of them are gone, and a young child is in the hospital with serious injuries. They were simply going about their lives on a Thursday morning and deserved to make it home safely. We issued charges against Mr. Payton immediately to protect our community and anticipate additional charges as the investigation continues.”
Mr. Payton is currently hospitalized and is being held by the Hennepin County Sheriff’s Office on $4,000,000 bail. He is scheduled to appear in Hennepin County District on Monday, Sept. 8th at 1:30 pm. As the investigation develops, additional charges related to the carjacking and use of a firearm are anticipated.
