Hennepin County Attorney Mary Moriarty statement on Longstreet sentencing

6/10/2024

Hennepin County Judge Scoggin Monday sentenced Lavon Longstreet to 367 months in prison for his role in the 2022 fatal shooting of Johntae Hudson inside the Mall of America.

Hennepin County Attorney Mary Moriarty released the following statement:

“My thoughts go first to the victim and to their family and friends, who continue to suffer through the devastating loss of a loved one. With the sentencing of Mr. Longstreet and his co-defendant, who killed one person and put the lives of many more at risk, we’ve now held both major actors accountable for Mr. Hudson’s death. These lengthy prison sentences reflect the severity of their actions and protect public safety.”

On Dec. 23, 2022, Lavon Longstreet, who was 17 at the time, and his co-defendant TaeShawn Adams-Wright shot and killed Hudson inside the Nordstrom at Mall of America.

Moriarty asked the court to certify Longstreet so he could be prosecuted as an adult, due to the egregious nature of the offense.

Both Longstreet and Adams-Wright pleaded guilty to one count of second-degree murder and one count of second-degree assault. Adams-Wright was sentenced May 30.

The men received identical sentences of 367 months for second-degree murder and 36 months for second-degree assault to be served concurrently.
